High Blood Pressure or Hypertension – A Silent Risk You Can Control
By Dr Savio D’Souza, Consultant Cardiologist
What is High Blood Pressure?
Your blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against your artery walls. When this pressure is too high for too long, it can damage your heart and blood vessels.
Your reading has two numbers:
- Top number (systolic): Pressure when your heart beats
- Bottom number (diastolic): Pressure when your heart rests
High blood pressure is 140/90 or above.
Why Does it Matter?
High blood pressure often has no symptoms – that’s why it’s called the “silent killer.” Left untreated, it can lead to:
- Heart attacks and strokes
- Heart failure
- Kidney problems
- Eye damage
But here’s the encouraging news: these complications are largely preventable with regular check-ups. “Check your blood pressure today!”
